Rasberry Ketone – A Look at Two Scientific Studies

by Raspberry Ketone on June 27, 2012

raspberry ketone medical studyAs the popularity of Raspberry Ketone has skyrocketed recently, so has the release of scientific studies about them. Studies of raspberry ketones go as far back as 2005, so this craze was being looked at before it even started. By studying the effect of this supplement on rats in controlled laboratory studies, researchers have found some interesting things about how it helps humans to lose weight. So let’s take a look at how these studies were put together and what they showed about Raspberry Ketones and their effect on weight loss.

A Study From 2005

These results are from a 2005 study by the Ehime University School of Medicine. It took place quite a while back, but it revealed a lot of information about how raspberry ketone prevents obesity. They took a group of mice and gave them all the same high-fat diet (40% fat), but they separated them into three groups based on how much raspberry ketone was in their diet. There were three groups whose diets consisted of .5%, 1% and 2% raspberry ketone respectively.

Everything in this study was controlled except the raspberry ketone intake, which was isolated. So what did they find out? It was reported that those mice whose diets consisted of 1% and 2% raspberry ketone supplements lost more weight and had less buildup of fat in the liver than mice who had no raspberry ketone at all. They concluded that raspberry ketones did in fact help to control obesity and fatty liver!

A Study from 2010

This study is brought to us from the Nutrition and Functional Food Research Team in South Korea. It’s obviously much more recent than the first study and was conducted a bit differently. The researchers separated the mice into two groups instead of one. One group was given 10 nanograms (nanograms!) of raspberry ketone while the other was just a control group. They compared three things between the groups: weight gain, fat burning and lipolysis.

Quick Info About Lipolysis: Lipolysis is the process in which the liver breaks down lipids into fatty acids. The better your liver is at lipolysis, the better it is at breaking down fat leading to weight loss.

The researchers reported back some very interesting things about the mice that had been given raspberry ketones in their diets. Most importantly, they found that these mice didn’t gain weight as fast and even burned fat off much faster than the control mice. But not only that, they also showed increased rates of lipolysis! This means that the mice that had the raspberry ketones actually had a sped up metabolism that helped them break down fat quicker and keep that fat off.

What We Learned

It’s great news that both of these studies had results that show great promise for raspberry ketone as an herbal supplement to aid weight loss. Combine these controlled studies with the endorsements of celebrities such as Dr. Oz and the extreme popularity with the general public and it really looks like raspberry ketone is a winner. It can’t hurt to try it, especially given all these rave reviews, so check it out for yourself!
